All About Attributing Images

Hi Everybody lately in Te Ngahere we have been learning about attributing images.  Some images on Google are not licensed so if you use them you could be charged a lot of money for copywriting there images.  Something I learned  in this task is how you attribute images on Google.  This is how you do it.  First you search up what you want and then go onto images.  Next you click on tools.  Then you click on usage rights and then creative commons licences.  All the pictures are licensed after you click on the  creative commons licence.  I could use this learning in the future to help me with finding images that licenced are for my work.

What I found hard about this challenge was finding the license for each of the images.  I had to search each page very hard before I found the licence.  The easy thing about this challenge was searching the images because there are many things you can search about.

Did you know how to attribute images?

The Wackiest Wednesday In The World

Hi everybody, on Wednesday the 17th of November we had a Wacky Wednesday.  Our challenge was to dress up in the wackiest possible way. I instantly decided I wanted to dress up as a lady.  I had the perfect plan.  I would borrow one of Mum’s dresses her floppy sun hat and a pair of sunglasses.  When the day came that is exactly what I did.  I like this day because everybody is so creative and imaginative and nobody can tease them.  The person that I think is best dressed is Hudson.  He is wearing a dress that has Rapunzel on it except he replaced the  Rapunzel with Rehudzel.  He looks hilarious.

Have you ever had a wacky Wednesday?

PAL Fun Day Extravaganza

Hi, It is term 4 the last term and the best one for learning.  On the last day of school last term we had a PAL fun day.  A PAL day is a day that is lead by students.  PAL stands for Physical Activity Leader.  Certain students sign up to do activities.  After that they lead groups in their activity, telling them how to do it and helping them get through them.  What I enjoyed most about PAL day is that we had a range of different activities to do.  All of them which I had a lot of fun in.  My favorite activity was one where you have an inflatable dart board and you throw a beanbag at it to get points.  A challenge I experienced was when I had to throw a ball in a bucket from a big distance.  I overcame this challenge by keeping on trying until I could get it in every time.  If we did it again I would want to have longer periods for the activities.

Have you ever had a big fun school event at your school?

Rubik’s Cube, A Simple Guide

Hi everybody, in lockdown we had to do a passion project.  For this we had to find out something we are passionate about.  We had a clear out of my room and I found my Rubik’s cube.  Earlier  in my life I had tried to solve it but failed.  I was bored in lockdown so I decided to give it another go.  We found an algorithm for it on the internet and tried to follow the instructions.  After fiddling around with it for 2 days we gave up on the algorithm.  We searched some more and found a video on Youtube.  This video showed me a step by step guide on how to solve a Rubik’s cube.  It was a very descriptive video.  After another day I had solved it.  I watched the video again and wrote down some instructions.  I printed out the instructions and I used them over and over again.  After awhile I managed to memorise the whole thing.  Now that I could solve the Rubik’s cube  without instructions I managed to get my time down to 1 minute 11 seconds.   I’m happy about my success.

The hard thing about solving the Rubik’s cube is the patience that goes into solving it the first time.  My favorite thing about it is the feeling when you solve it.

Have you ever come close or solved a Rubik’s cube before?

The Hardest Thing Ever

Hi everybody, for the past few weeks we have been working on our Science Fair Projects.  It was really hard but we had a great learning experience.  Some of the things I learnt is to make my project happen were; The type of variables we used (independent variables, dependant variables and controlled variables), the hypothesis, the results of our science project (the winner was the paper towel Handee Ultra) and using the scientific method.  There were also a lot of things that were really hard as well.  Some of these things were; that other members of our group were away, that our plan changed a lot so we didn’t really know what we were doing, that we were learning things at such an alarming rate that our brains were swarmed with information and that we had a deadline that put us under a lot of pressure.  Even though we had a few trip up’s we eventually got our Science Fair board up and ready to present.

If we could do this again I would change the member of my group because he distracted me a lot and when we were testing we could of used a bigger variety of paper towel brands.  In this project I had to use my hoe of Kaha (being strong) and Tu Maia (resilience) to help me not give up on what I was doing.  For this project I found everything a bit confusing and not very easy.

Have you ever done a Science Fair Project?

The Greatest Marble Challenge Ever

Hi, for the past few weeks we have been doing something called the great marble challenge.  We had to build a structure that would make a marble go 1.1m.  I was in a group with George and Mark.  We were quite unsure about what to do so we decided to brainstorm for a long time.  Eventually we came up with what to do.  We decided to use my chromebook and then stack a tube on top of it.  Finally we decided to get some cardboard and attach it underneath the tube.  We were doing this to learn how to follow the scientific method and to help us prepare for science fair that is coming up soon.

When we had finished building we moved onto testing.  We rolled the marble down for the first time and it was very off our goal.  We modified it and added Mark’s chromebook underneath as well.  From there on we tested and modified.  Most of them were changing the angle up and down.  When we finally thought we had got it right we wrote down our instructions.  The next day was competition day and we were happy with what we had done until it got to our turn.  Someone else from another group had to read our instructions and then test our marble run.  When he read out our instructions we realized something was terribly wrong.  Only half of our instructions were on the paper.  We were dumbfounded because we only got nine points out of 50.  The hardest part about this project was coming up with the design and building it because we needed to measure how long we wanted our supplies.  The easiest bit was writing the instructions because we had already tested how to do it so many times.

Have you ever made your own marble run?

Check Out What Happened When We Went To The Science Roadshow

Hi,  Te Ngahere went on a bus to Bay Of Islands College for the Science Roadshow.  There was a show that taught us about gases.  From this show I learnt that if you fill a balloon with hydrogen and then give it oxygen the ballon exploded.  After that we went off and could interact with the science projects.  One of my favorite exhibits was on a solar powered car.  You had to turn on light and spin the board. When you did the car moved away from the light.  This would be great in future because as long as the sun is shining your car will zoom forward non stop and not as much energy will be wasted.  In the other show we learnt that you only change one variable at a time otherwise you do not know what made it better.  This information will hopefully help me in my science project that we are going to do soon because I may change to much at once and not know what is helping and what isn’t.

Have you done a science project before?

Magnificent Mosaics

In Te Ngahere we have been making mosaics.  The reason for this is because we are going to put these

up with our studies about our animal, tree or insect.  We had to find a picture on Google and put it on a Google drawing.  Next we had to use the polyline tool and make small shapes to go over our picture.  I chose a tiger to do my mosaic on.  As soon as I did the first few shapes I instantly saw how hard it was.  I didn’t realize that tigers had so many colours.  Over time I slowly got better and faster at making my shapes.  I might use this on tiles in the future when I improve on my skills but for now I will use it to make detailed pieces of art.

I think what I could do better is make the shapes smaller.  What I think I did well was when I tried to fill in as much of an area as possible at a time.

Have you ever made a mosaic before?

Sharing What I Do In P.E Rotations

Hi everyone.  Lately Te Ngahere and Te Maunga have been doing P.E rotations.  We had to work in our house groups and do sport rotations.  They are netball, soccer, touch and, ball skills.  So far I’ve learnt how to pivot in netball, how to pass the ball in soccer, in touch I learnt some rules of touch like when you get touched you put the ball down and wait for someone else on your team to pick it up.  I also learnt that the touching team has to go back five steps before they are allowed to touch anyone again.  Last but not least in ball skills I learnt how to throw and catch the ball.

What I did well is I throw balls with force.  What I could do better is I need to try catch balls better because at the moment I’m not very good at it.

Do you know how to play these sports?

The Perfect Project Island Song Floating Classroom Day

Hi, in Te Ngahere the year sixes did Project Island Song’s floating classroom.  We had to be at school by 8:20 before leaving and walking down to the walf.  When we got there I saw our boat was called D3 or Discovery 3.  Some of us were given jobs.  One of the health and safety people were away so I was chosen instead.  My job was to make sure that everyone was on the boat and then on Urupukapuka (the island we went to) I had to make sure we didn’t lose anybody.  We had a safety briefing and then we were off zooming through the ocean toward our destination.  After a while we pulled into a island.  Our boat driver turned off the engine and we got to listen the birds for a while.  After we turned the engine back on we drifted over to some shag’s nesting.  When we got to the island we had some morning tea before splitting into two groups.  We walked over a hill to plant some trees.  I planted a rewarewa tree.  After my group got back we made some traps.  I found it quite hard to make the traps because the structure would fall apart in our hands.  On the way back we were really lucky because we found a pod of bottlenose dolphins.  The reason we did this is because we were helping Project Island Song bring the bird song back.

Have you ever been on Project Island Song’s Floating Classroom?

What Do You Know About Expanding Numbers

Hi guys we have been learning about expanding numbers.  We had to make a success criteria and explain what we were trying to do.  Next we had to put our success criteria on multiple equations.  Our one worked quite well.  I was very impressed with myself  because we constructed a success criteria without any guidance apart from our worksheets.  Last but not least we had to make some DLO’s about what we were doing.  The reason we were doing this is because we have a knowledge gap in between what we were learning and what we are going to learn next.  I think what I did well was when I helped the other person in my group understand it until she could do it without me saying anything.  What I could have done better next time is I should  of put a bit more detail in the success criteria because it wasn’t very clear on what you had to precisely do.

Do you know how to expand numbers and if you don’t watch the video?

Fabulous Fish Frenzy

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about using Google tools.  We had to use shapes to create animals.  The purpose of this is that we don’t normally use Google tools.  Sometimes it makes your DLO’s look a lot better because when you put your shapes in it gives your DLO creativity.   I might use this as a creative way to share my learning with you in the future.  With the shapes we could create some animals.  I tried to make them look cartooney.  I made a squid, a shark and a orca.  My favorite part was making the animals expressions and what they were doing.

I think that making the base of the animals was the easiest for me.  Next time I could probably get more detail in them. I also might put what they look like in real life to help me put in detail.

What do you know about Google tools?

What do You Know About The Gray’s Tree Gecko

Hi everyone, we have been working on a big project lately.  In our learning groups we have been learning about a certain type of animal, insect or plant.  We chose a gecko.  Our group chose this because we all liked geckos and nobody really knows about them and they are barely ever seen.  So on the internet we searched up NZ geckos.  It came up with 13 different geckos.  One of the first ones said Nautilus and we decided, that was the one we would choose.  We found out that Nautilus Grayii is actually the scientific name and is more well known as the Gray’s Tree Gecko.

Next we had to do a lot of research (and when I say a lot, I mean lots).  Some of the questions were: Where do they live or grow, What is its diet or why is it important to protect it. After a long time of bum numbing hard researching we had finally finished.

Here are a few of our facts:

  • Some of the males have distinct pale blue flanks

  • The Gray’s Tree Gecko have an incubation period of 7.5 months

  • It is important to protect the Gray’s Tree Gecko because they help balance ecosystems.

The next instruction said we had to make a creative way to share our learning.  Our group all thought we should make an animation.  The reason for that is they are easy to make and it is quite creative as well.  What I found hard was I had to do a lot of researching because some things were harder to find than others.  The thing that was easy was making the speaker notes because all we really had to do was copy and paste from our learning onto our slides.

What animals do you know about?

What Do You Think Of This Super Work

In Te Ngahere we did an ed pro 8 challenge that involves making catapults.  We watched a video about the different types of energy we might use.  They were called potential and kinetic energy.  Potential energy is when it’s still and kinetic energy is when it’s moving.  We had to make our catapults out of: 30 bamboo sticks, 30 rubber bands, 2 A4 pieces of paper, 1 A3 piece of paper, some string, some electric tape and a pair of scissors.

It was quite easy at first because we thought we had an idea but it didn’t work.  We had lots of different ideas after that, but they all didn’t work either.  Finally we made a design that was sturdy.  We were about to test it when our teacher all of a sudden said it’s time to pack up.  I was so mad because I had to break my creation.  What I found challenging was cooperating with my group.  What I think I could do better next time is listen to more ideas if we have any more.  I think I need to the improve the sturdiness of our catapult.  Do you know how to make a catapult?

The Ultimate Fail

Welcome back it’s term 2 and I’m ready for a lot more learning.  In Te Ngahere we have been learning about following instructions.  We were given a piece of paper with 23 directions.  The purpose of this test was to help us follow instructions carefully.  We had four minutes to complete the test.

The first instruction said: read everything carefully before doing anything.  I read everything but when I got to the last instruction I was a bit confused, it said: Now you have finished reading everything carefully, do only sentences one and two!  Then draw quietly on the back of this paper while you wait for everyone else to finish!  I was a bit confused so I moved back to the start to follow each instruction.  When we came back down to the mat to discuss we all realised our mistake.  I saw it as my ultimate fail.  What I could have done better was read the instructions more carefully.  It felt a bit funny to have everyone do something wrong and then we all laughed about it.  From now on I will try to read the instructions more carefully.    Do you follow instructions carefully?

A Beginners Guide to Surfing The Web

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about Smart Surfing on the internet. We had to make a copy of the Smart Surfing slide and then highlight the keywords. On the next slide we had to write what we were going to search.  An example of a keyword search is instead of typing “what do spiders eat” you should type “spider diet”.  The reason for that is because Google has a thing called a spider.  Whenever you type an irrelevant words like what and how the spider will shoot a web at all the websites with the irrelevant word you searched .  Then if type a search with no keywords in it you end up with a lot more answers that are irrelevant to the search you want.  What I found easy was I had to find a website using the keyword searches.  The hardest part was finding the link with the best information.  Do you use keyword searches to make it easier on Google?

Insane Pronouncing of Te Reo Moari

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about pronouncing Te Reo Maori properly.  The website we’re using is called Education Perfect.  We had to record the Maori alphabet, greetings and place names.  I really enjoyed it because I didn’t really know how to pronounce my alphabet correctly.  It’s helping me in Kapa Haka with my pronunciation as well.  Our screencastify had to be at least thirty seconds long.  What I found easy was that I had to listen to the words and get them stuck in my head.  The hardest bit about it was doing my screencastify because I was under pressure and I was worried that I wouldn’t get it right.  Do you know how to pronounce your Maori alphabet, your Maori greetings and your Maori place names?

Magnificent Work That Will Help You Learn About Coastal Seas

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about coastal seas.  We had to watch a documentary about coastal seas by David Attenborough.  It was quite long and interesting.  We wrote down some interesting facts about what we saw.  An example is Dolphins use mud to trap their prey.  Another great fact is in Kelp Forests Sea Otters and Sheephead Wrasse love to eat Sea Urchins and only the biggest of the wrasses can tackle the black urchins.  Next we had to make a DLO about our facts and what we saw.  I found it hard because I had to write down my facts and see the documentary at the same time.  I found it easy to put my facts together and make a DLO.

Have you ever heard of David Attenborough?

Sharing my Knowledge on Equal Additions

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about equal additions.  We had to learn and evidence it by making a screencastify.  In equal additions you have to add the same amount of numbers to each side to make it easier and keep it balanced.  First you write the equation, next you add some numbers to one side before doing the same to the other. (Hint: it might help if you round it to a tidy number.)  Lastly you subtract your new numbers from each other.  I learnt what equal additions was because I have never been taught it before.  I found it hard at first because I didn’t know how to do it properly but slowly it became really easy.  Next I need to learn a variety of strategies to help me solve hard problems.  Here is my screencastify.  Do you know what Equal Additions is?

The Terrifying Taskmaster

This week in Te Ngahere we have been learning about team building and collaboration.  We had to get a piece of paper and copy a drawing, except we couldn’t look at the drawing.  One person in your group (‘the walker’) had to walk outside, look at the drawing and then come and tell the drawer of the group what they saw.  I learnt that it was a lot harder to tell people what we saw because we could not touch the piece of paper.

We had two attempts.  On the first attempt I was the drawer.  I found it easy because I already had all the colours I needed.  The thing I found hard was what my group member was trying to explain, because it didn’t have enough detail.  What I found challenging was that we were timed and it put me under more pressure.

The second attempt I was one of the walkers.  We got a lot more done the second time because we already knew what to do, so it made it a lot easier for us.  The hard bit the second time was the drawer didn’t understand what we were saying.  The second time was also challenging as well because we were not seeing the pictures correctly, and we were saying things wrong.

The differences between mine and my teachers drawings are: some of the things were missing, some of them were the wrong colour and some of them were crossed out so we took up more space than it was meant to.

Do you like Taskmaster? 1st attempt

Outstanding Facts That Will Help You Learn About Measurement

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about measurement. We had to work through worksheets before making a google drawing about measuring.  We could use centimeters but we had to  convert the answers into millimeters .  We had to convert between millimeters and centimeters.  As well as centimeters converted into meters.

I learnt what approximately means.  I also learnt the best way to estimate is by going off what you already know such as when your trying to measure the width of paper and your pencil was the same length.  If you knew how long your pencil was you would know how wide your paper is (unless it snapped or got sharpened)

The hardest part was reading the instructions carefully and understanding them.  The easiest part was trying to estimate.

Do you like to measure things?

How to Create a Food Web

This week in Te Ngahere we have been learning about food webs.  A food web is a diagram of lots of animals with arrows to show what eats what.  We had to make a food web in Te Ngahere by putting the little food in the middle (invertebrates) and then we had to put some of the native birds and trees around it.  Next we put the predators around the outside.  Then we had to put arrows in.  The arrows show how the energy is transferred from one organism to another.  Lastly we had to compare our food webs to our teachers.  My differences were some of my arrows are not in the right place or missing because I missed some information or the information was not true.  For example I didn’t research the predators eating other predators.  I learned that some animals eat a lot more than others.  What I found easy was putting the creatures in the right place and researching what they eat.  The hard bit was putting the energy transfer the right way.   Have you made a food web before?

What Do You Think About Tsunamis?

In the Bay of Islands we had to evacuate our school because of a
tsunami warning.  The whole school had to gather up and walk up Totara Heights Way.  When we got to the top, lots of cars came up the hill and panicked faces of parents appeared looking for their children. We slowly went up the hill as more and more children got picked up.  I felt quite scared but excited because I’d never experienced a tsunami before.  I was scared because I was worried about my family at home.  I learnt what it was like to stay up a hill for five hours;I eventually got very bored. One of our teachers tried to entertain us with some quizzes. The most exciting part was when the sausage company Fritz’s Wieners came up with lots of sausages and shared their them with us.  The people in the neighbourhood were kind to us too.  Another exciting thing was when some teachers went down and got our bags for us, a wooo went up as they passed us with our bags.  Did you evacuate for the tsunami?

Interesting Facts I Bet You Never Knew About Ecosystems

This week in Te Ngahere we have been learning about ecosystems.  We had to read through a text before filling out what we learnt and what we now understand.

I learnt that ecosystems can be any size and that ecosystems are made up of producers, consumers and decomposers.  I also learnt that ecosystems all have an energy source that is the sun.  I found it quite hard because I had never done this type of reading before. What do you know about ecosystems?

The Essential Guide To The Kawa Of Care

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about the Kawa of Care. We had to read through the expectations of a chromebook before making an animation.  I found out that I have to keep my charger at home.  I had to screencastify my animation.  It took a few attempts but I managed to make a good screencastify.   Do you know the Kawa of Care? I hope you enjoy my screencastify.

Mind-Blowing Facts About Roy Lichtenstein

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about Roy Lichtenstein.  We had to read about Roy Lichtenstein and then we had to write down key facts. Then we had to predict what techniques we are going to use for our self portraits we are going to make soon.  Here is my work.
